How to evaluate the cost of a TESU practicum delay

TESU determines registration, academic charges, course sequencing, accepted clinical or practicum hours, and whether a placement delay changes completion. Ask for the choices that apply to the student's program and term in writing. Another student's withdrawal, late start, project pause, or registration result is not a reliable price estimate.

Current TESU material publishes 750 total hours for the FNP pathway and 750 total hours for the PMHNP pathway. The DNP requires 1,000 post-BSN practice hours, with at least 500 completed at TESU. A delay can affect one course, a portion of the remaining hours, or the project workflow, so the total program figure alone does not reveal the financial effect.

For DNP, ask whether the active constraint is the preceptor, site, verification of prior hours, CITI training, agency review, TESU IRB, or the scholarly project timeline. A project that cannot move to its next approved phase may create a different delay than a site that needs one missing document.

List school charges only after TESU confirms them. Add physical-site travel using the proposed location, schedule, mileage, tolls, parking, lodging, or local transportation. Add site or compliance expenses only when the organization or university has identified the requirement. Label estimates clearly so uncertain numbers are not mistaken for invoices.

Then account for time. Reduced RN shifts, unpaid leave, schedule changes, extended childcare, delayed job transition, or another period of travel can matter even when they are not university charges. Use the student's real work and household information rather than salary claims or a generic national estimate.

Create a date range for each open approval. A clinician may agree while administrator approval, an affiliation agreement, malpractice proof, or other onboarding remains incomplete. For DNP, include the sequence for agency review and TESU IRB preparation. The worksheet should show which delay is driving the timeline rather than adding every possible expense automatically.

• Time for preceptor, administrator, affiliation, and university review.
• For DNP, site, prior-hour verification, agency review, IRB, and project milestones.

Use the same start window, travel assumptions, work impact, and approval lead time for three paths: continue the personal search, use a sourcing service, or take the academic option TESU provides. A cheaper lead is not useful if the clinician, site, patient population, or project access does not fit the course.

Do not treat payment, preliminary interest, or a directory result as an approved start. Ask which written notice TESU and the physical site require before activity begins, and keep a backup until that point. A realistic comparison should include the possibility that a proposed match needs revision.

TESU permits approved telemedicine sessions as a specialty placement, completed remotely or within the practicum site, but no more than 50% of each 8-week term may use telemedicine. All normal approvals apply. A cost comparison should not assume a fully remote term or eliminate physical-site travel from the budget.

For state review, the applicable state is where patients are physically located. If the expected patient location varies, ask TESU how that affects approval before using telemedicine to estimate travel or schedule savings. Review of a virtual-capable proposal never guarantees that its sessions will be approved or counted.

A sound worksheet can show a conditional telemedicine scenario alongside the physical baseline, clearly marking every unresolved approval. If written permission is not available, use the physical plan for the decision.
